Caprera

CAperra is an Italian island of the La Maddalena archipelago, off the north-eastern coast of Sardinia. Its territory administratively belongs to the municipality of La Maddalena and is entirely included in the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park, a protected area of national and community interest. In particular, the marine area in front of the Punta Rossa area, the extreme southern extension of the island, is an area with maximum environmental protection, with Cala Andreani and the Shipwreck beach. The eastern ridge of the island is a fully protected land area, while the marine area in front of Punta Coticcio, including Cala Coticcio, is protected by provisions of the national park management body. From a biological-naturalistic point of view, the presence of numerous endemic species throughout the island is significant. The island has less than 100 inhabitants, mostly residents in the village of Stagnali. The place has a significant weight in Italian mass culture as it was the final resting place of Giuseppe Garibaldi and the place where his ashes rest; his house is now a museum named after him, owned by the ministry of culture.
